PROPRIETOR
Proprietor Tim Slater is a reclusive and eccentric scientist, engineer, and inventor, who worked over the years in Silicon Valley at a variety of small startups, in a little known field called micromachining. A relatively prolific inventor, Tim is named on over 25 patents in his chosen field and has worked on projects as widely varied as micro-satellite thermal controllers, artificial retinas for vision restoration in the blind, and large-scale optical networking equipment.
Before becoming a self-proclaimed "Mad Scientist (mad crazy, not mad angry)", Tim's life was marked by a different spectrum of creativity revolving around wine, food and music. His undergraduate and graduate studies in college were mainly scientific, but were tempered by stints as a DJ on the college radio station, and as a member in a wide variety of garage bands. A formal introduction to wine appreciation in 1986 was so interesting that his scientific career was nearly derailed in favor for a life in the world of wine. The appreciation of wine also led to a deeper appreciation of fine food and the self-guided study of cooking techniques and principles around the world.
Several years later, while working at a research institute near Brussels, Tim took an extended vacation to deepen his understanding of French cuisine by attending Le Cordon Bleu Academy in Paris.
Over a decade later, the well-publicized dot-com implosion in Silicon Valley convinced Tim that it was time to seek a new kind of life. Long searches and a surprising serendipity brought Tim to Sarah's Vineyard, which he purchased in 2001. Tim still occasionally does some engineering and design work, but his life now revolves around his three life loves — fine wine, fine food and music. The opportunity to combine them is one that he pursues patiently, day by day, at Sarah's Vineyard. It is, after all, where Wine is Music from the Vineyard.
